Visit of NHM Vienna and the Venus of Willendorf with HEAS guest Andrew Kandel

13.11.2023

On 13 November after the HEAS seminar we visited the Natural History Museum with HEAS speaker Andrew Kandel

In the afternoon of 13 November 2023, we invited HEAS speaker Dr. Andrew Kandel to visit the Natural History Museum Vienna and specifically its Department of Prehistory

Dr. Karina Grömer, director of the Department of Prehistory, kindly gave Dr. Andrew Kandel, Dr. Marjolein D. Bosch and Ass.-Prof. Dr. Philip R. Nigst a wonderful tour of the Museum. One definte higlight was the Venus of Willendorf and a glimpse at the Willendorf II, Grub-Kranawetberg and other Upper Palaeolithic collections on exhibition. The tour also included a detailed look at the collection of shell ornaments of Grub-Kranawetberg with Dr. Marjolein D. Bosch.

Another highlight of the tour was the visit of the roof of the museum. Absolutely spectacular views over the centre of Vienna on a rainy afternoon.
