Kostenki-Borshevo region

A foggy August morning in the Don river valley.

The Kostenki-Borshevo site complex on the Don river is one of the more important Upper Palaeolithic site-complexes of Europe. It comprises more than 20 archaeological sites located in tributaries to the main Don valley about 40 km south of the town of Voronezh. The sites cover the period from about 50 kya to the Holocene and comprise Early, Middle and Late Upper Palaeolithic assemblages.

Our team has been working at the site of Kostenki 14, the chronostratigraphy of the Early Upper Palaeolithic of the region, and contributed to the study of the genome of the Kostenki 14 burial.
