Transcarpathian Ukraine

Vitaly Usik (r) and Paul Haesaerts (l) discussing sediment at Beregovo I, Ukraine

The Upper Tisza valley is located in the border region between Ukraine, Romania and Hungary. Our work focuses on the Ukrainian part of the valley in so-called Transcarpathian Ukraine, just south of the Carpathian Mountains. The area is well know for its Palaeolithic sites and home to the iconic site of Korolevo I (>1.2 Mya to 30 kya). Our team has been working in the Upper Tisza valley since 2010 and the focus of our work have been the sites of Beregovo I and Korolevo II. Both are sites that were excavated in the past and our new fieldwork concentrates on (1) generating a larger, well stratified archaeological collection, (2) establishing a chronostratigraphic context and (3) providing a palaeoenvironmental context for the human occupation.

This project is a collaboration with Vitaly Usik (Museum of Archaeology, Institute of Archaeology, Ukrainian Academy of Sciences). Further partners are: Larissa Kulakovska (Museum of Archaeology, Institute of Archaeology, Ukrainian Academy of Sciences), Paul Haesaerts (Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences), Freddy Damblon (Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences), and Natasha Gerasimenko (University of Kyiv).
